about

A lot of bands like to stamp “DIY” to their projects—meaning they record their own albums, or spray-paint their own T-shirts or whatever, but Paul Jacobs one-ups them by being literally the only person in his band.

Jacobs has been playing one-man-band jams a la Bob Log III and early Ty Segall as early as 2012, and has been putting out some really great stuff. His feet are the drummers, his hands shred some killer garage rock riffs on guitar and twist all the knobs on his effect pedals, while he’s yelling about only God knows what through the fuzzy, echo-laced vocals. There are a handful of people who have done what Jacobs is doing with the one-man-band thing, but none make it sound as full, or seem nearly as comfortable being four musicians at one time live.

Jacobs has self-released four albums in 2013, and his latest – “Drug Theaters” – is some of his best work yet. It’s not standard, cookie-cutter garage stuff either—the songs make up a great album, but they also stand out from one another. “Trippin’ in the Park,” for example, switches abruptly from a mid-tempo psych stomper-- to a spacey Built to Spill sounding guitar and kick drum outro.

The album definitely pays homage to the heavy-hitters of the genre like Segall and Thee Oh Sees, but it has a life of its own. Jacobs’ songwriting is strong on “Drug Theaters,” and the attached video should speak volumes of his talent. It is no easy feat to play every instrument at the same time, and to actually sound good doing it-- well, that’s nearly impossible.

Jacobs has a promising music career ahead of him, but if that doesn’t pan out, he’s also got a promising art career ahead of him. If neither of those pan out—he’ll be the most talented sandwich artisan at Subway.

Track Name: Drug Theaters
You touch, my brain, and it turns to mush
Drives me, insane, when you talk to much
Last time, today, and I know its true
Time slips, away, So won't you come and take me with you

Wont you come and take me with you x2

I guess, I'll try, to get off the floor
You called, my name, I love you much too much
This time, I know, it'll be the last
Time slips, away, so won't you come and take me with you

Won't you come and take me with you x3

Drug theatres last all night and day x2

Drug theatres last all night and day x4
Track Name: I Got It
So long to my baby
So long to the city
So long to the country
So long to the dead end
x2

I got it x2

So long to my baby
So long to the city
So long to the country
So long to the dead end
x2

I got it x4

You want it, you want it, you want it, I can't stop x4
Track Name: Trippin' in the Park
Trippin out all day
Trippin out all day
We're here till tomorrow
Trippin out all day

But she wants to stay, in the park
She wants to stay, in the park

I'll go get my car
It is getting dark
I forgot your number
When we were tripin in the park
Track Name: Sixteen Hours a Day
I watch the clock
I count the days
Sit on the phone
Can't feel my legs
Wait for the News
Sixteen hours a day
Can't fall asleep
Can't feel my legs

So come on, come on, come on, get out of my way x2

Spend time with you
Sixteen hours a day
Wait for bad news
Can't feel no pain
Sleep in my shoes
Wait, for the dawn
Can't come too soon
Won't go away

So come on, come on, come on, get out of my way x2

So come on, come on, come on, get out of my way x4
Track Name: Ghost Noises
I, am never coming back
I, am never coming back
It's true, I'm never coming back
Yes I, am never coming back

I watch, the walls they turn to black
The floor, I watch it turn to black
To far, I never will come back
Yes I, am never coming back

I wil stay, in this hole, forever ( repeated )
Track Name: When You're Dead
Falling on the street
Taking a drag
Stop counting numbers
Im Changing my name
Already too late
She's going to bed
Under the covers
You're already dead

It don't really matter when you're dead
Nothing really matters when you're dead

Looking on the floor
I can't get a job
Tiered of calling you
Questions need to stop
I'm falling asleep
You're changing your name
It's too hard to keep
And I'm feeling the same

It don't really matter when you're dead
Nothing really matters when you're dead
Track Name: Basement Corner
He's standing in the corner
The corner of the basement

Then I'm guna get you girl

But it's so hard
Track Name: Sharp Dress
Fall asleep, in a dream with a girl I know
In a sharp dress
Can't believe anything outside my door
In a sharp dress
Where you been? My baby says I don't know
She's in a sharp dress
Fall asleep, in a dream with a girl I know
In a sharp dress

Can't see the dream no more, can't live outside my door

In my Sleep
