about

A lot of bands like to stamp “DIY” to their projects—meaning they record their own albums, or spray-paint their own T-shirts or whatever, but Paul Jacobs one-ups them by being literally the only person in his band.

Jacobs has been playing one-man-band jams a la Bob Log III and early Ty Segall as early as 2012, and has been putting out some really great stuff. His feet are the drummers, his hands shred some killer garage rock riffs on guitar and twist all the knobs on his effect pedals, while he’s yelling about only God knows what through the fuzzy, echo-laced vocals. There are a handful of people who have done what Jacobs is doing with the one-man-band thing, but none make it sound as full, or seem nearly as comfortable being four musicians at one time live.

Jacobs has self-released four albums in 2013, and his latest – “Drug Theaters” – is some of his best work yet. It’s not standard, cookie-cutter garage stuff either—the songs make up a great album, but they also stand out from one another. “Trippin’ in the Park,” for example, switches abruptly from a mid-tempo psych stomper-- to a spacey Built to Spill sounding guitar and kick drum outro.

The album definitely pays homage to the heavy-hitters of the genre like Segall and Thee Oh Sees, but it has a life of its own. Jacobs’ songwriting is strong on “Drug Theaters,” and the attached video should speak volumes of his talent. It is no easy feat to play every instrument at the same time, and to actually sound good doing it-- well, that’s nearly impossible.

Jacobs has a promising music career ahead of him, but if that doesn’t pan out, he’s also got a promising art career ahead of him. If neither of those pan out—he’ll be the most talented sandwich artisan at Subway.
